Claims in the prior week were revised up to 393,000 from an original reading of 390,000. The average of new claims over the past four weeks, meanwhile, dropped by 4,000 to 396,750, also the lowest level since early April. Continuing claims declined by 57,000 to 3.61 million, and a total of 6.77 million people received some kind of state or federal benefit in the week ended Oct. 29.

Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate owned by billionaire Warren Buffett, said Q3 net profits fell 23.8% to $2.28 billion or $1,380 per share. Profits were buffeted by $1.59 billion of losses on derivatives, much of which were unrealized losses. In case you forgot, Berkshire had sold put options on the S&P 500, FTSE 100, Euro Stoxx 50, and the Nikkei 225. Given the stock market's poor showing in Q3, it's no surprise that the value of Berkshire's option positions fell. However, these puts don't start to expire until June 2018, which is consistent with Buffett's long-term bullish thesis on stocks. In case you were wondering, Berkshire's operating earnings, which exclude the impact of derivatives, jumped 36.8% to $3.81 billion or $2,309 per share. Analysts were expecting $1,796 per share. =))

Initial claims from two weeks ago were revised up to 406,000 from an original reading of 402,000. The average of new claims over the past four weeks, seen as a more accurate gauge of labor trends, fell by 2,000 to 404,500. The number of Americans who continue to receive regular state unemployment checks, meanwhile, declined by 10,500 to 3.70 million in the week ended Oct 22. Continuing claims are reported with a one-week lag. About 6.78 million people received some kind of state or federal benefit in the week ended Oct. 15, up 103,117 from the prior week. Total claims are reported with a two-week lag.

Nov 1 (Reuters) - Barclays Capital is providing $200 million in one-year bridge financing to Jakarta-listed thermal coal exporter PT Bumi Resources , Basis Point reported on Tuesday, citing banking sources. The loan would help the company raise funds to prepay a $600 million tranche of convertible debt issued to sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corp (CIC), it said. The Basis Point report comes as Indonesia's Bakrie Group, which partly owns Bumi Resources, entered a deal to sell about half its stake in London-listed Bumi Plc to coal miner PT Borneo Lumbung Energi in a $1 billion deal to avoid a loan default. The bridge financing goes hand-in-hand with a $200 million one-year bridge loan provided by JPMorgan as well as $350 million in two separate term loans arranged recently for Bumi Resources, Basis Point said. Barclays declined to comment, while JPMorgan and Bumi were not immediately reachable. The total $750 million from the bridge and term-loan facilities are more than sufficient to repay the $600 million due October 2013 tranche of the $1.9 billion debt issued to CIC in September 2009, Basis Point said. The CIC debt pays a cash coupon of 12 percent annually and an additional amount on maturity, taking total annual returns on CIC's investment to 19 percent, it said.
